Your key, your recovery phrase, passkeys.
Can anyone read my notebook?
No. Everything is encrypted on your device before it syncs, with a key derived from your recovery phrase. The server only ever holds ciphertext — even the maker can't read it. The full architecture is on the security page.
What is the recovery phrase?
It's the root key to your notebook, and it can't be reset. If you lose it along with your other credentials, your notebook can't be recovered — by anyone, including us. The same math that keeps everyone out keeps us from helping here. Write it down somewhere real.
Can I unlock with Touch ID or a passkey?
Yes. Add a passkey in Settings and unlock with Touch ID or Face ID. The authenticator itself produces the key, so it's as private as it is fast. (On Firefox, passkey unlock falls back to your passphrase for now.)
Does it lock itself?
Yes — after a stretch of inactivity the notebook locks, and needs your passphrase or a passkey again. Settings → Security → auto-lock lets you set that to Never, 5, 15, 30 minutes, or an hour (15 is the default). You can also lock it right away with ⌘L (or the lock button).
